ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2

The third and final part of my build review has now been published on The Modelling News; https://www.themodellingnews.com/2020/09/construction-review-ptiii-icms-48th.html?fbclid=IwAR1DedsBOJRuviNIUubRwduHTIxuNUME8EAybGftu_Ldm8VnfJqKHFXsGA4&m=1 This part covers the painting, decalling and final finishing bits so go and have a look. I must admit the cover photo ‘Night Terror’ looks really impressive and even makes my model look good lol. MANY manyContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”

ICM 1/48 Dornier 217J-1/2

YAY I actually finished a model! That wasn’t a bad kit really, quite enjoyable and my first WW2 Luftwaffe subject for quite a while. I’m posting pics here taken with my mobile phone but better ones taken with my DSLR will appear in part 3 of this build on The Modelling News when it isContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier 217J-1/2”

After applying the decals and sealing them in with another coat of Tamiya X-22 gloss varnish, I applied a panel line wash to the model using Mig Productions Dark Brown wash on the top side and PLW Blue Grey on the undersides. Both colours were brushed on, left to dry for an hour or soContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”

While I was in the mood I got the decals on tonight too and to be honest they put up a fight as although they are commendably thin, they wanted to curl up on themselves at every opportunity. Even putting the backing sheet onto the model and sliding them off that way, the decals managedContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier 217J-1/2”

I had a bit of a setback this week when applying the decals. Starting with the red hatched lines for the wing-walk areas, after struggling to get them straight and off the backing sheet without twisting them I still managed to put them in the wrong place. I had already applied Micro Sol to themContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier 217J-1/2”

Now that the masking tape is off and after spraying a couple of areas I missed, I gloss varnished the model. I’ve never really enjoyed doing this as the process has been hit or miss (mostly miss) for one reason or another over the years. I changed from Tamiya X-22 to Alclad Aqua Gloss aContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”

ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2

I sprayed the top colours tonight and peeled off the masking tape and I’m very glad to say that I had no reaction between paint and tape. I used Tamiya masking tape and although it’s an expensive way of doing it, there was no having to spend hours cleaning off the paint and having toContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”

After spraying and masking the undersides and fuselage, I sprayed the first top colour (RLM75) today. Because the top colours are darker the panel lines were sprayed with XF-63 German Grey, after which the base colour was over-sprayed to give a pre-shade. The base colour was lightened with Tamiya X-2 and sprayed in between panelContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”

After priming the model, painting is now underway; The light blue is RLM76 and because the surface area to cover is big, I mixed up my own using Tamiya XF-23 and X-2 using a mix I found online. With the addition of acrylic retarder the paint went OK to a point but due to itContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”

Following on to the previous post the build is complete; The model will now be taken apart again, cleaned up and masked off ready for painting. Not a bad kit really and I enjoyed building it, obviously there were some areas that needed attention and some of the details need refining but generally it’s aContinue reading “ICM 1/48 Dornier Do217J-1/2”
